Ribworker D - 925 - Self-Righting Extreme Conditions Survey RIB
When the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), on behalf of the Government of South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands, researched the RIB market for two new craft for use in the treacherous waters of Antarctica, the immensely strong, aluminium-hulled, 'Ribworker' was selected.
These robust and exciting craft were built to exacting standards to include the following special features:- reinforced to double thickness in areas vulnerable to ice contact, completely self-righting capabilities, flying bridge, twin-engine/jet power train via gearboxes, comprehensive electronic suite and high-impact Solid Foam Tubes.

Although the primary role of these craft is to tackle the burgeoning Fishery Protection Operations, additional vital duties include the logistical demands of ongoing Scientific Research and Rescue duties etc. in this far-flung isolated region, which is beset with the severest of dangers.
A carefully designed multi-purpose Console is placed across the stern of the RIB, most importantly incorporating the capsize, shut-off aspiration valves to the engine room, and an additional CO² activated air-bag to reinforce the inherent self-righting capabilities of the wheelhouse.
The strengthened wheelhouse has extra-thick 9.5mm, polycarbonate windows, 6 fully articulating seats, special climate-control techniques to accommodate both the demands of cold and possible capsize together with high-visibility flying bridge for close contact work in ice and boarding etc.
The design is based on the well-proven 'Ribworker' hull, which has become an Industry Standard for operations in the most inhospitable regions of the world. Modern design and manufacturing techniques are employed throughout the design and construction, including CNC aluminium cutting, high-tech welding techniques and Maxsurf modelling Software to determine precisely, the righting moment of these craft.
An altogether challenging project that successfully met the delivery demands dictated by the departure of the supply ship 'M.V. Ernest Shackleton' on her annual expedition to re-supply the BAS bases in Antarctica.
